John Frederick Stickland
     John Frederick Stickland, son of John Stickland and Harriot Elizabeth (?), was born in 1824 or 1825 in Salisbury, Wiltshire.1,3 He was baptised on 15 January 1826 at St Martin's Church, Salisbury, Wiltshire.2

John Frederick was the fourth of five known children. His siblings were Harriet Maria (b 1818), Selena (b 1820), Arabella (b 1823) and Elizabeth (b c1828).

John Frederick Stickland married Elizabeth Joy, daughter of John Joy and Elizabeth Anderton, after Banns, according to the rites and ceremonies of the Established Church on 22 June 1848 at the Parish Church, Cranborne, Dorset. The marriage was conducted by J H Carnegie, Vicar. Their witnesses were John Frederick's sister Elizabeth and her husband James Coombs.4

John Frederick and Elizabeth appeared in the 1851 census of West Parley, Dorset, at Three Legged Cross. Their children Elizabeth Jane and Ann were listed as living with them, as was Ann Coombs, a 26 year old unmarried visitor. John was described as a Labourer.3

In 1861, John Frederick was a Grocer.5

John Frederick and Elizabeth appeared in the 1861 census of Cranborne, Dorset, at Boveridge Heath. Their children Elizabeth Jane, Ann, Mary, Fanny and Frank were listed as living with them. John was described as a Labourer.6

John Frederick and Elizabeth appeared in the 1871 census of Three Legged Cross, Cranborne, Dorset. Their children Frank, Sarah Ellen and Jesse were listed as living with them. John was described as a Grocer and Carman.7

John Frederick was named an heir in the will of his uncle Thomas Lukes dated 24 April 1871. He received an eighth share of the furniture.8

John Frederick and Elizabeth appeared in the 1881 census of Three Legged Cross, Cranborne, Dorset, at Silver Street Grocer's Shop. Their children Mary, Frank, Sarah Ellen and Jesse were listed as living with them. John was described as a Grocer and Baker.1

In his later years John Frederick was a Farmer.9

John Frederick Stickland died on 25 March 1888 in Three Cross, Cranborne, Dorset. The cause of death was given as phthisis (tuberculosis).10,11 He was buried on 31 March 1888 in Verwood Churchyard.12

The inscription on his headstone reads as follows:

"In loving memory of John Frederick Stickland dearly beloved husband of Elizabeth Stickland who departed this life March 25th 1888 aged 63 years. His end was peace. Also of the above Elizabeth Stickland who departed this life October 29th 1901 aged 76 years. To God be the glory, great things He hath done."11


John Frederick Stickland left a will dated 09 Jun 188[?], leaving all his wordly goods to "my dear wife Elizabeth Stickland".13
