Hilda

  • Hilda Stickland was born on 22 Mar 1897 at 82 Hazlebury Road, Fulham, London. Her parents were Frank Stickland and Jane Harris. She was the youngest of three children. Her siblings were Frederick Frank (b 1894) and Elsie (b 1895).
  • She appeared in the 1901 census at 2 Beadonwell Road, Belvedere, Erith, Kent. Also recorded there were her parents, her sister Elsie (b 1895) and her brother Frederick (b 1894).
  • Hilda married John (Jack) Albert Davis, son of Charles Albert Davis and Jessie Helen Roffey, on 4 Sep 1920 at St Mary’s Church, West Moors, Dorset. Their witnesses were Elsie Stickland and a Sidney L Black.
  • She died on 7 Jul 1983 at Newsham House, 262 Stroud Road, Tuffley, Gloucester, aged 86.

Frank Stickland

  • Frank Stickland was born on 28 Feb 1861 in Verwood, Cranborne, Dorset. His parents were John Frederick Stickland and Elizabeth Joy. He was number five of seven children. His siblings were: Elizabeth Jane (b 1849); Ann (b 1851); Mary (b 1853); Fanny (b 1855); Sarah Ellen (b 1866) and Jesse (b 1869).
  • He was baptized on 29 Mar 1861, on Good Friday, at St Michael and All Angels’ Chapel, Verwood.
  • He was listed as the 1 month old son of Frederic Stickland in the 1861 census at Boveridge Heath, Cranborne. His mother, Elizabeth, was recorded, along with his sisters Elizabeth, Ann, Fanny and Mary. The girls are all described as Scholars.
  • Frank appeared in the 1871 census at Woolsbridge Farm, Three Legged Cross, Cranborne. He is recorded as a Scholar and the 10 year old son of John F Stickland. Only two other siblings are listed; sister Sarah Ellen (aged 4) and brother Jesse (aged 2).
  • He was listed as the son of John Frederick in the 1881 census at Silver Street Grocer’s Shop, Three Legged Cross. Frank’s occupation, and that of his sisters Mary and Sarah Ellen, was given as Shop Assistant. At age 12, Jesse is still a scholar.
  • Frank appeared in the 1891 census at 56 Myrdle Street, Mile End Old Town, Stepney, London. He was described as an unmarried Constable in the Metropolitan Police. Frank was a Boarder in the household of George House (54yrs), Lawyer, with 2 other PCs.
  • Frank Stickland married Jane Harris, daughter of Matthew Harris and Charlotte Martin, after Banns, according to the rites and ceremonies of the Established Church on 25 Nov 1893 at St John's Church, Highbury, Islington, London. The marriage was conducted by A W Gough MA. Their witnesses were Edward Henry Corbett and Anne Corbett.
  • Frank was recorded as a Police Officer in the census of 31 Mar 1901 at 2 Beadonwell Road, Belvedere, Erith, Kent, England.
  • By 1920, Frank had returned to Dorset and was describing himself as an ex-Police Officer.
  • He died on 22 Dec 1928 at Longhope, West Moors, West Parley, Dorset, aged 67. The cause of his death was given as Kidney Disease. His daughter Elsie was present at his death and acted as informant to the Registrar.
  • Frank was buried in St Mary's Churchyard, West Moors, on 26 Dec 1928 (there is no memorial).

Jane Harris

  • Jane Harris was born on 5 Aug 1869 at Twineham, Hurstpierpoint, Sussex, the daughter of Matthew Harris and Charlotte Martin. She was second of six children. Jane’s siblings are: Philip (b 1867); Priscilla (b 1876); Mary Ann (b 1881); Maria (b 1886) and Olive (b 1888).
  • Jane appeared in the 1871 census of Westmeston, Ditchling, Sussex, at Gander's Cottage, in her parents' household.
  • Jane appeared in the 1881 census at Averys Cottages, Clayton, Sussex. She was described as an 11 year old Scholar.
  • Jane appeared in the 1891 census at Chelsea Workhouse Infirmary, Cale Street, Chelsea, London. She was described as a single Nurse of 21 who had been born in Burgess Hill (perhaps the Enumerator had never heard of the villages of Twineham or Clayton?).
  • Jane Harris married Frank Stickland, son of John Frederick Stickland and Elizabeth Joy, after Banns, according to the rites and ceremonies of the Established Church on 25 Nov 1893 at St John's Church, Highbury, Islington, London. The marriage was conducted by A W Gough MA. Their witnesses were Edward Henry Corbett and Anne Corbett.
  • Jane appeared in the 1901 census, as Frank’s wife, at 2 Beadonwell Road, Belvedere, Erith, Kent. Once again, she gave her place of birth as Burgess Hill.
  • Jane died on 24 Mar 1958, aged 88, at Longhope, West Moors, Dorset. The cause of death was given as Chronic Senile Myocarditis.
  • She was apparently not buried with Frank as the churchyard at West Moors was closed to burials by then.

Hilda’s Paternal Grandparents

John Frederick Stickland

  • John Frederick Stickland, son of John Stickland and Harriot Elizabeth (--?--), was born between 1825 and Jan 1826 in Salisbury, Wiltshire. He was born fourth of five known children. His siblings were Harriet Maria (b 1818), Selena (b 1820), Arabella (b 1823), and Elizabeth (b 1827).
  • John Frederick was baptized on 15 Jan 1826 at St Martin's Church, Salisbury, Wiltshire.
  • During his lifetime, he gave his name variously as John, Frederic(k), John Frederick or Frederick John.
  • Where was he on the night of the 1841 census?
  • John Frederick married Elizabeth Joy, daughter of John Joy and Elizabeth, on 22 Jun 1848 at The Parish Church, Cranborne, Dorset. Their witnesses were John Frederick's sister Elizabeth and her husband James Coombs. (Unfortunately, and presumably since his father was deceased by then, the vicar failed to record John’s father’s name or occupation.)
  • John Frederick and Elizabeth appeared in the 1851 census of West Parley, Dorset, at Three Legged Cross. Their children Elizabeth Jane and Ann were listed as living with them, as was Ann Coombs, a 26 year old unmarried visitor. John was described as a Labourer.
  • John Frederick and Elizabeth appeared in the 1861 census of Cranborne, Dorset, at Boveridge Heath. Their children Elizabeth Jane, Ann, Mary, Fanny and Frank were listed as living with them. John was described as a Labourer.
  • John Frederick and Elizabeth appeared in the 1871 census of Three Legged Cross, Cranborne, Dorset. Their children Frank, Sarah Ellen and Jesse were listed as living with them. John was described as a Grocer and Carman (carter).
  • John Frederick and Elizabeth appeared in the 1881 census of Three Legged Cross, Cranborne, Dorset, at Silver Street Grocer's Shop. Their children Mary, Frank, Sarah Ellen and Jesse were listed as living with them. John was described as a Grocer and Baker.
  • John Frederick died on 25 Mar 1888 at Three Legged Cross, Cranborne. His wife Elizabeth registered the death. The cause of his death was given as Phthisis (tuberculosis).
  • He was buried on 31 Mar 1888 in Verwood Churchyard, Cranborne.
  • John Frederick Stickland left a will dated 09 Jun 188[?], leaving all his wordly goods to "my dear wife Elizabeth Stickland".

Elizabeth Joy

  • Elizabeth Joy, daughter of John Joy and Elizabeth Anderton, was born on 3 Aug 1825 in Verwood, Cranborne, Dorset. She was the fifth of seven children. Her siblings were John Henry (b c1818), Samuel (1821-1905), Jane (b 1822), Mary Ann (b 1823), Martha (b c1827) and James (b 1828).
  • Elizabeth was baptized on 29 Mar 1829 at St Leonard's Church, Shoreditch, Middlesex. Five of her siblings were baptized here on the same day. (John Henry was the exception.)
  • She appeared in the 1841 census at Verwood, Cranborne, Dorset, aged 15, in her parents' household.
  • Elizabeth married John Frederick Stickland on 22 Jun 1848 at The Parish Church, Cranborne, Dorset. Their witnesses were John Frederick's sister Elizabeth and her husband James Coombs. (Unfortunately, and presumably since her father was deceased by then, the vicar failed to record Elizabeth’s father’s name or occupation.)
  • Elizabeth and John Frederick appeared in the 1851 census of West Parley, Dorset, at Three Legged Cross. Their children Elizabeth Jane and Ann were listed as living with them, as was Ann Coombs, a 26 year old unmarried visitor.
  • Elizabeth and John Frederick appeared in the 1861 census of Cranborne, Dorset, at Boveridge Heath. Their children Elizabeth Jane, Ann, Mary, Fanny and Frank were listed as living with them.
  • Elizabeth and John Frederick appeared in the 1871 census of Three Legged Cross, Cranborne, Dorset. Their children Frank, Sarah Ellen and Jesse were listed as living with them.
  • Elizabeth and John Frederick appeared in the 1881 census of Three Legged Cross, Cranborne, Dorset, at Silver Street Grocer's Shop. Their children Mary, Frank, Sarah Ellen and Jesse were listed as living with them. Apart from Jesse, all were working as shop assistants.
  • Elizabeth witnessed the death of John Frederick Stickland on 25 Mar 1888 at Three Legged Cross.
  • Elizabeth Joy married James Thorne, son of Richard Thorne, on 6 Nov 1889, at the Register Office, Wimborne. Their witnesses were Tom William Meaby (husband of Elizabeth's daughter Fanny) and Jane Deacon. James’ first wife, Sarah Lockyer, had died in Nov 1888, aged 62.
  • Elizabeth appeared in the 1891 census as the 64 year old wife of James Thorne, a Gamekeeper of 66. They were living in Crab Orchard, Cranborne, just a few doors away from John and Sarah E Thorne. John was the son of James, and Sarah the daughter of Elizabeth and John Frederick Stickland! The young Thornes have a 1 year old daughter, Elsie Louisa. John is a 27 year old Farmer; his wife is listed as being 24.
  • Elizabeth is listed as a widow and Head of Household in the 1901 census. (James had died some seven years earlier and was buried in Verwood Churchyard on 3 Jan 1894.) With Elizabeth was her daughter, Mary Ingram; her husband William Ingram, Butcher, is enumerated just a few doors away. They were all living on the Three Legged Cross side of Crab Orchard.
  • Elizabeth Joy died on 29 Oct 1901, aged about 76, in Three Cross. The cause of death was given as Senile Gangrene (6 months) [likely to be gangrene of a leg due to poor circulation] and Cardiac Syncope.
  • She was buried in Verwood Churchyard on 2 Nov 1901.

Hilda’s Maternal Grandparents

Matthew Harris

  • Matthew Harris was born circa 1841 in or around Guildford, Surrey, the son of George Harris. He had one known sibling, an older brother Charles.
  • Matthew and Charlotte appeared in the 1871 census of Westmeston, Ditchling, Sussex, at Gander's Cottage. Their children Philip and Jane were listed as living with them, as was Matthew’s brother Charles Harris. Matthew was described as a Chair Bottomer.
  • He married Charlotte Martin, daughter of Thomas Martin and Susan Ray, on 9 Jan 1874 at the Register Office, Cuckfield, Sussex. Matthew gave his occupation as a Chairmaker.
  • Matthew and Charlotte appeared in the 1881 census of Clayton, Sussex, at Averys Cottages. Their children Philip, Jane, Priscilla and Mary Ann were listed as living with them. Matthew was described as a Cane Chair Bottomer.
  • Matthew and Charlotte appeared in the 1891 census of Clayton, Sussex, at 4 Alma Cottages, Portland Road. Matthew was described as a Chair Mender. Their children Priscilla, Mary Ann, Maria and Olive were listed as living with them.
  • Matthew was described as a Hawker in 1893, on Frank and Jane’s marriage certificate.
  • In 1901, he was listed as Harris Matthew, a 61 year old Chair Mender, of 1 Alma Cottages, Clayton. He gave his place of birth as East Horsley, Surrey.

Charlotte Martin

  • Charlotte Martin, daughter of Thomas Martin and Susan Ray, was born on 30 Sep 1850 in Bosham, Westbourne, Sussex, at Old Fishbourne.
  • She appeared in the 1851 census at Bosham. Charlotte was enumerated as the 6 month old granddaughter of John Martin.
  • She registered the birth of Jane Harris on 5 Aug 1869.
  • Charlotte and Matthew appeared in the 1871 census of Westmeston, Ditchling, Sussex, at Gander's Cottage. Their children Philip and Jane were listed as living with them, as was Matthew's older brother Charles Harris.
  • Charlotte married Matthew Harris, son of George Harris, on 9 Jan 1874 at the Register Office, Cuckfield, Sussex.

John Stickland

  • John was baptized on 18 May 1794 at Horton, Dorset, the son of William Stickland and Priscilla Fisher.
  • John was the fourth of seven children. His siblings were Priscilla (bap 1787), Peter (bap 1789), William (bap 1791), Mary (bap 1796), Sarah (bap 1799) and Ann (bap 1803).
  • John Stickland married Harriot Elizabeth (--?--) circa 1816.
  • In 1826 John was a Hostler in Salisbury.
  • John died before 1848.

Harriot Elizabeth (--?--)

  • Harriot Elizabeth married John Stickland, son of William Stickland and Priscilla Fisher, circa 1816.

John Joy

  • John Joy was born circa 1776 in Dorset.
  • John Joy married Elizabeth Anderton, daughter of William Anderton and Ann Smith, on 23 Dec 1817 at St Luke's Church, Old Street, Finsbury, London, Middlesex.
  • John and Elizabeth appeared in the 1841 census of Verwood, Cranborne, Dorset. Their children John, Samuel, Elizabeth and Martha were listed as living with them. John was described as an Agricultural Labourer.
  • John died between 1841 and 1851. A John Joy of Verwood, aged 68, was buried in Verwood Churchyard on 22 Nov 1846; this is probably our John.

Elizabeth Anderton

  • Elizabeth Anderton, daughter of William Anderton and Ann Smith, was born circa 1786 in Lincolnshire. She was the second of eight children. Her siblings were James (bap 1784), Ann (bap 1787), Sarah (bap 1789), William (bap 1791), Ann (bap 1794), Mary (bap 1796) and Henry (bap 1798). Presumably, the first Ann died before the second was born.
  • Elizabeth Anderton married John Joy on 23 Dec 1817 at St Luke's Church, Old Street, Finsbury, London, Middlesex.
  • Elizabeth and John appeared in the 1841 census of Verwood, Cranborne, Dorset. Their children John, Samuel, Elizabeth and Martha were listed as living with them.
  • Elizabeth appeared in the 1851 census of Verwood, Cranborne, Dorset. Elizabeth was described as a House Keeper. Her son Samuel was listed as living with her, together with his wife Susanna Coombs.
  • An Elizabeth Joy, aged 74, was buried in Verwood Churchyard on 10 Jan 1861. Her place of residence was given as in the forest near Ringwood. She is probably our Elizabeth.

Thomas Martin

  • Thomas Martin, son of John Martin and Sarah Gass, was born between 1824 and 1826 in Birdham, Westhampnett, Sussex. He was fourth of six known children. His siblings were Abraham (bap 1821), Eliza (1822-1824), George (bap 1824), William (bap 1828) and Frederick David (bap 1830).
  • Thomas was baptized on 25 Jun 1826 at Birdham, Westhampnett, Sussex.
  • He appeared in the 1841 census of New Fishbourne, Bosham, Sussex, in his parents' household. He was described as an Agricultural Labourer.
  • Thomas Martin and Susan Ray may have married between 1841 and 1851.
  • He was recorded as a Hawker in 1849 and 1850.
  • Thomas Martin appeared in the 1851 census of Bosham, Sussex, in his parents' household, together with his wife, Susan Ray, and daughters, Charlotte and Mary Ann. He was enumerated as a 25 year old Haggler and Dealer.
  • He died before 1874.

Susan Ray

  • Susan Ray, daughter of William Ray and Ann (--?--), was born circa 1830 in Aldingbourne, Sussex. She was baptized on 27 Jun 1831 at Aldingbourne, Sussex.
  • Susan Ray may have married Thomas Martin, son of John Martin and Sarah Gass, between 1841 and 1851.
  • Susan Ray appeared in the 1851 census of Bosham, Sussex, in the household of John Martin and Sarah Gass. She was described as a Dealer in Toys.

William Stickland

  • William was baptized on 15 Dec 1751 at Horton, Dorset.
  • He was the second of five children. His siblings were John (bap 1749), Robert (b c1752), Joseph (bap 1753) and Sarah (bap 1756).
  • William Stickland married Priscilla Fisher by Banns, according to the rites and ceremonies of the Established Church on 23 Mar 1785 at Christchurch Priory, Hampshire. The marriage was conducted by William Jackson, Vicar. Their witnesses were Thomas Whitehouse and Susanah Emberley.
  • William died in Feb 1837, aged 85, in Horton, Dorset.
  • He was buried on 16 Feb 1837.

Priscilla Fisher

  • Priscilla Fisher married William Stickland, son of Robert Stickland and Margaret Wheaton, by Banns, according to the rites and ceremonies of the Established Church on 23 Mar 1785 at Christchurch Priory, Hampshire. The marriage was conducted by William Jackson, Vicar. Their witnesses were Thomas Whitehouse and Susanah Emberley.

  • William Anderton married Ann Smith on 28 Jul 1783 at St Mary Magdalene-in-the-Bail, Lincoln, Lincolnshire.

  • Ann Smith married William Anderton on 28 Jul 1783 at St Mary Magdalene-in-the-Bail, Lincoln, Lincolnshire.
  • Ann left a will dated 2 Dec 1833, naming her oldest son James Anderton as sole executor and an heir. Ann's surviving children were also named as heirs, being listed as Elizabeth Joy, William Anderton, Ann Anderton, Mary Booth and Henry Anderton.
