Thomas Martin, son of John Martin and Sarah Gass, was born circa 1825 in Birdham, Westhampnett, Sussex.2 He was baptised on 25 June 1826 in Birdham, Westhampnett, Sussex.3
Thomas was the fourth of six children. His siblings were Abraham (bap 1821), Eliza (bap 1822, d 1824), George (b c1824), William (b 1828) and Frederick David (bap 1830).
Thomas appeared in the 1841 census of New Fishbourne, Bosham, Sussex, in his parents' household. He was described as an Agricultural Labourer.4
In 1849, Thomas was a Hawker.5

Thomas appeared in the 1851 census of Bosham, Sussex, in his parents' household, together with his wife, Susan, and daughters, Charlotte and Mary Ann. Thomas was described as an Agricultural Labourer.2
It seems that Thomas Martin and Susan Ray married between 1841 and 1851. However, no record of a marriage has been found.2
