     Elizabeth Joy, daughter of John Joy and Elizabeth Anderton, was born on 3 August 1825 in Verwood, Cranborne, Dorset.1,4 She was baptised on 29 March 1829 at St Leonard's Church, Shoreditch, Middlesex.4

Elizabeth was the fifth of seven children. Her siblings were John Henry (b c1818), Samuel (1821-1905), Jane (b 1822), Mary Ann (b 1823), Martha (b c1827) and James (b 1828).

Elizabeth appeared in the 1841 census of Verwood, Cranborne, Dorset, in her parents' household.2

Elizabeth Joy married first John Frederick Stickland, son of John Stickland and Harriot Elizabeth (?), after Banns, according to the rites and ceremonies of the Established Church on 22 June 1848 at the Parish Church, Cranborne, Dorset. The marriage was conducted by J H Carnegie, Vicar. Their witnesses were John Frederick's sister Elizabeth and her husband James Coombs.5

Elizabeth and John Frederick appeared in the 1851 census of West Parley, Dorset, at Three Legged Cross. Their children Elizabeth Jane and Ann were listed as living with them, as was Ann Coombs, a 26 year old unmarried visitor.6

Elizabeth registered the birth of her son Frank Stickland in 1861 in Cranborne.7,8,9

Elizabeth and John Frederick appeared in the 1861 census of Cranborne, Dorset, at Boveridge Heath. Their children Elizabeth Jane, Ann, Mary, Fanny and Frank were listed as living with them.8

Elizabeth and John Frederick appeared in the 1871 census of Three Legged Cross, Cranborne, Dorset. Their children Frank, Sarah Ellen and Jesse were listed as living with them.10

Elizabeth and John Frederick appeared in the 1881 census of Three Legged Cross, Cranborne, Dorset, at Silver Street Grocer's Shop. Their children Mary, Frank, Sarah Ellen and Jesse were listed as living with them.1

Elizabeth registered the death of her husband, John Frederick Stickland in 1888 in Three Cross, Cranborne, Dorset.11,12

Elizabeth was named sole executrix and heir in the will of John Frederick Stickland dated 09 Jun 188[?].13

Elizabeth Joy married second James Thorne by Licence, on 6 November 1889 at the Register Office, Wimborne, Dorset. Their witnesses were Tom William Meaby and Jane Deacon.3

Elizabeth and James appeared in the 1891 census of Crab Orchard, Verwood, Dorset. Also listed was Albert Davis, a 14 year old General Servant, born in Boscombe, Hampshire.14

Elizabeth appeared in the 1901 census of Three Cross, Verwood, Dorset, at Crab Orchard. Her daughter Mary was listed as living with her, just a few doors away from her husband, William Ingram.15

Elizabeth Joy died on 29 October 1901, aged 76, in Three Cross, Verwood, Dorset. The cause of death was given as "senile gangrene" (of six months duration) and "cardiac syncope."16 She was buried on 2 November 1901 in Verwood Churchyard.17,12

She is commemorated on her first husband's headstone. The inscription reads as follows:

"In loving memory of John Frederick Stickland dearly beloved husband of Elizabeth Stickland who departed this life March 25th 1888 aged 63 years. His end was peace. Also of the above Elizabeth Stickland who departed this life October 29th 1901 aged 76 years. To God be the glory, great things He hath done."12
