     Agnes Devan, daughter of James Devan and Annie Boyd, was born on 28 June 1871 in Castle Douglas, the Stewarding of Kirkcudbright, at King Street.1,2

Agnes was the sixth of eleven children. Her siblings were Elizabeth (b 1861), Thomas (b 1863), Hugh (b 1865), Annie (b 1867), James (b 1869), Thomas (b 1873), John (b 1873), Charles (b 1875), Margaret (b 1880) and Arthur (b 1885). The first Thomas probably died before 1871. The second Thomas and John were twins who both survived into adult life.

Agnes Devan appeared in the 1881 census of Stranraer, Wigtownshire, at 24 Hanover Square, in her parents' household. She was described as a Scholar.2

Agnes Devan appeared in the 1891 census of Girvan, Ayrshire, at 14 Montgomery Street, in the household of Hugh Devan. She was described as a Housekeeper.5

In 1891, Agnes was a Domestic Servant.4

Agnes Devan married Samuel O'Neill, son of Charles O'Neill and Mary Hamill, after Publication, according to the rites and ceremonies of the Roman Catholic Church on 26 August 1891 at St Joseph's Chapel, Girvan, Ayrshire. The marriage was conducted by John Augustine O'Neill. Their witnesses were James Devan and Margaret Gallacher.4,6,7

Agnes and Samuel appeared in the 1901 census of Airdrie, New Monkland, Lanarkshire, at 3 South Nimmos Street. Their children Charles, James, John, Arthur and Mary were listed as living with them.8

In 1923 Agnes and Samuel lived at 19 Moore Street, Cadzow, Hamilton, Lanarkshire.7

Agnes registered the death of her husband, Samuel O'Neill in 1923 in Bothwell, Lanarkshire.7

Agnes Devan died on 30 April 1928, aged 56, in Cadzow, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, at 19 Moore Street. The cause of death was given as pulmonary carcinoma (lung cancer) of three months duration.3
